Frequently Asked Questions
ABOUT
What is a lactation consultant?
An International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) is a trained healthcare provider who specializes in the clinical management of human lactation and infant feeding. IBCLCs help with everything from getting a comfortable latch to navigating supply concerns, painful nursing, pumping, bottle feeding, and more. We’re here to listen, troubleshoot, and cheer you on while embracing what works best for your family!
Do you only help families if they are breastfeeding?
Absolutely not! Whether you are exclusively breastfeeding, pumping and bottle feeding, or any combination, we are here to help. We also support families at every stage of the journey, including prenatal planning, getting started with breastfeeding, bottles and pumping, returning to work, starting solids, weaning, and more.
SCHEDULING
How do I schedule an appointment?
Please visit our scheduling page to self-schedule an appointment or complete our online contact form for more information.
What types of appointments are available?
We offer home visits and in-office appointments in Tucson and surrounding areas, as well as virtual telehealth services for families located anywhere in the U.S. Travel fees may apply for home visits.
HEALTH INSURANCE COVERAGE
Do you accept health insurance?
Yes! We are in-network with most major health insurance plans, including Aetna, Anthem, BCBS, Cigna, Centivo, Meritain, Oscar, United, and UMR. Lactation care is considered a preventive service under the Affordable Care Act, which means most plans cover our services in full. If we're not in-network with your plan, we can provide you with a superbill to submit to your insurance for reimbursement.
Do I need a referral to book an appointment?
No referral is needed—just schedule directly through our website! If your insurance plan does require a referral, we’ll let you know during intake and help you get what you need.
WHAT TO EXPECT
What can I expect during an appointment?
During your visit, we’ll listen to your goals and concerns, observe a feeding (if you'd like), and work together on a plan that feels right for your family. We'll cover any questions you have and make sure you feel supported every step of the way.
I'm still pregnant. When do you recommend scheduling?
At Thrive Theory, we believe that prenatal preparation is one of the best ways to set yourself up for an empowering feeding journey. Early in the third trimester, or before your baby shower, is a great time to have a prenatal lactation consultation!
What if I’m feeling overwhelmed or emotional about feeding my baby?
You’re not alone—Feeding your baby can bring up all kinds of emotions. We believe that when families thrive, so do their little ones. Supporting your mental and emotional wellbeing is a top priority for us, and we'll be here for you with zero judgment.
When should I reach out for help?
Any time you have questions or concerns—big or small. Many families see us during pregnancy to prepare, in the early days after birth, or later when new challenges pop up. You're never too early or too late!
